Gunung Sibayak

A volcano of about 2,212 m north of Berastagi. Its Karo name means 'king', and the climb is one of the most beginner-friendly in North Sumatra.

Sibayak's last eruption is dated to around 1881, but its geothermal activity still shows in steam vents (fumaroles), sulphur deposits and a small crater lake. There are three main routes: the well-kept, beginner-friendly Semangat Gunung/Raja Berneh route, the most popular Jaranguda route, and the harder '54' route from Doulu, best done with a guide. Many climbers set off before dawn to see the sunrise from the summit, then soak in the hot springs at the foot of the mountain.

🚗 Getting there: About 60 km from Medan. From Berastagi head to Jaranguda village (Merdeka district), the start of the tourist route; the climb to the summit usually takes 2–3 hours.
🎟 Admission: Rp10,000 per person (detikSumut, January 2024)
💡 Tip: Bring a warm jacket, a torch and drinking water if you climb for the sunrise, as the summit is very cold before dawn.
