Tangkahan

Eco-village on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park, where the Batang Serangan and Buluh rivers meet. Sumatran elephants are bathed in the river; there is jungle trekking, tubing, waterfalls and hot springs, and wild orangutans live here too.

In 2001 villagers who had lived from logging agreed to protect the forest and founded the Lembaga Pariwisata Tangkahan (LPT), which has worked with the Gunung Leuser National Park authority since 2002. The elephants of the Conservation Response Unit (CRU) patrol the forest and are bathed in the river every morning. Many people around Tangkahan are Karo. Wild orangutans do live here, but sightings are not guaranteed; Bukit Lawang is the well-known place to see them.
