Museum Pusaka Karo

A museum in the former Catholic Church of St Mary in central Berastagi, holding hundreds of Karo heritage objects.

The museum was initiated by the Dutch Capuchin missionary Father Leo Joosten (known as Leo Joosten Ginting) and opened on 9 February 2013; it is now run by the Yayasan Pusaka Karo foundation. Its collection of over 800 objects includes gold and silver jewellery, manuscripts in Karo script, traditional dress, masks, farming and hunting tools, and models and ornaments of Karo houses.

🚗 Getting there: In central Berastagi, Jalan Perwira, not far from the fruit market.
💡 Tip: Worth visiting before Lingga or Dokan to better understand Karo house architecture and customs.
