Bukit Lawang

⚠ Note: A flash flood destroyed much of the village on 2 November 2003. Keep away from the riverbank in heavy rain.

Village on the Bahorok River, the eastern gateway to Gunung Leuser National Park. An orangutan rehabilitation centre was founded here in 1973; today semi-wild and wild orangutans can be seen on guided treks.

🚗 Getting there
About 86 km north-west of Medan, via Binjai.
💡 Tip
Enter the forest only with a licensed guide, and never feed the orangutans.
